How to stop gambling in Kenya

An order of operations. Exclusion first, because it works while your motivation is high; the money and the help afterwards, because those take longer and you will need the exclusion to still be holding.

Updated · The Natybet Desk

Start with self-exclusion, and do every operator you hold an account with in one sitting — it is a right licensed Kenyan operators must provide, and it applies per operator, so doing one of four accounts achieves almost nothing. Then delete the apps and leave the tipster groups, so the decision stops being re-presented to you daily. Then deal with the money as a debt rather than as something to be won back. Then get help, which is free and is treatment rather than judgement.

That order is deliberate. Exclusion is the step that works fastest and depends most on motivation you have right now; the financial and medical steps take weeks and are much easier to complete when betting is already blocked. If you only do one thing today, do the first one.

  1. Self-exclude from every operator today, not just the main one

Self-exclusion is a right that licensed Kenyan operators must provide, usually in the account or responsible-gambling section of the app. It applies per operator, so excluding from one while holding four accounts achieves very little. List every account you have — including ones you have not used in months — and do all of them in one sitting.
  2. If you cannot find the setting, ask support by name

Message the operator's support and use the exact words: 'I am requesting self-exclusion from my account.' Licensed operators are obliged to action it. Keep the reply. If an operator ignores a self-exclusion request, that is a complaint for the Gambling Regulatory Authority, and it is worth making.
  3. Delete the apps and cut the prompts

Uninstall every betting app, unsubscribe from operator SMS, leave the tipster WhatsApp and Telegram groups, and unfollow the accounts. Kenyan betting is push-marketed hard. If the prompts keep arriving, you have to make the decision again every single day; remove them and you make it once.
  4. Make depositing slow and awkward

Remove saved paybills from your M-Pesa favourites so that depositing needs the number looked up rather than tapped. If someone you trust is willing, ask them to hold the larger part of your money for a period. Friction is not a solution but it converts an impulse into a decision, which is often the whole difference.
  5. Tell one person

Secrecy is the strongest predictor of gambling harm getting worse. It does not have to be everyone — one person you trust removes the mechanism that lets this escalate quietly, and gives you someone to call at the point where you would otherwise reopen an account.
  6. Deal with the money as a debt, not as a bet to be recovered

Any plan whose first step is 'win it back' is the problem continuing under a new name. Write down what is owed and to whom, talk to lenders about restructuring rather than avoiding them, and be extremely wary of anyone offering to recover gambling losses for a fee — that is a follow-on scam that targets exactly this moment.
  7. Get free help — it is treatment, not judgement

Gambling disorder is a recognised condition with recognised treatment. A doctor or counsellor at a public health facility is a legitimate free starting point. Befrienders Kenya offers free, confidential emotional support by phone, and you do not need to be in crisis to call. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or Befrienders Kenya now.

Why the per-operator thing matters so much

There is no single national register that closes every Kenyan betting account at once. Exclusion is a contract between you and one operator, so a person with accounts at four books who excludes from their main one has removed roughly a quarter of the problem and will discover the other three quickly.

Write the list first: every operator you have ever registered with, including the one you used twice a year ago. Dormant accounts are the ones that get used, precisely because they were forgotten when the decision was made.

Crash games are a harder stop than football

If what you are stopping is Aviator or another crash game, expect it to be harder than stopping football betting, and know that this is structural rather than a failure of will. A football bet settles in ninety minutes; a crash round settles in under thirty seconds. That difference turns an evening containing three decisions into one containing hundreds, and every round ends with a visible number you “should have” cashed out at.

That manufactured regret is the retention mechanism, and naming it changes how it feels. The mechanics, including why no pattern in the history strip means anything, are at Aviator in Kenya.

The scams that target people who are stopping

Two of them, both common, both aimed at exactly this moment:

If today is bad

Debt is recoverable and it is survivable, however it looks tonight. Befrienders Kenya provides free, confidential emotional support by phone and you do not need to be in crisis to call them. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, please contact emergency services or Befrienders Kenya now rather than reading further.

The signs, the help available, and how to support someone else who is struggling are covered in more depth on our responsible gambling page.

Why a betting site publishes this

Fair question. We write betting analysis and we carry commercial links, both of which are disclosed. We also think the Kenyan market is systematically dishonest with bettors about the odds they face, and a site built on that objection does not get to skip the page about stopping. If this one is the most useful thing we ever publish, that is an acceptable outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How do I self-exclude from Betika, SportPesa and other Kenyan sites?

Each operator provides self-exclusion in its own app, normally under account settings or a responsible-gambling section, and it must be requested from each operator separately. If you cannot find it, message support and request self-exclusion by name — licensed operators are obliged to action it and to confirm it in writing.

Does self-exclusion cover all betting sites at once?

No. There is no single national exclusion register that closes every Kenyan account in one action, so self-exclusion has to be done operator by operator. Make a list of every account you hold before you start, including dormant ones, because a forgotten account is the one that gets used.

Can I block betting deposits on M-Pesa?

There is no general gambling-transaction block available on an ordinary M-Pesa line. What you can do is remove saved paybills from your favourites so depositing requires deliberate effort, and ask someone you trust to hold the bulk of your money for a period. Friction is not the same as a block, but it reliably converts an impulse into a decision.

How long should I self-exclude for?

Longer than feels necessary. The period you would choose in a calm moment is almost always shorter than the one that actually helps, and the point of exclusion is precisely to override the judgement of a future version of you who wants to bet. Choose the longest option the operator offers.

I stopped and then started again. Does that mean it will not work?

No. Relapse is a normal part of stopping, not evidence that stopping is impossible, and treating it as final is the belief that does the most damage. What it usually means is that one of the practical steps was skipped — an account not excluded, an app not deleted, or nobody told.

Can Natybet close my betting accounts?

No. We are an independent publisher, not an operator. We hold no accounts and no funds and have no control over any betting site. Self-exclusion has to be requested from each operator directly, which is also why nobody claiming to close accounts on your behalf for a fee should be paid.
