Where the numbers come from
Each match has three possible results: home win, draw, away win. Two matches give 3 × 3 = 9 combinations. Three give 27. The count multiplies by three for every match added, which is why a slate that grows from 13 to 17 games does not get a bit harder — it gets eighty-one times harder.
