The two ways to deposit

The first is from inside the app: choose deposit, enter an amount, and confirm the prompt that arrives on your handset with your PIN. The second is manually through the M-Pesa menu — Lipa na M-Pesa, Pay Bill, business number, account number, amount, PIN. SportPesa also accepts Airtel Money, which is worth knowing if you are not on Safaricom, since most Kenyan books are M-Pesa only.

The in-app route is safer, and not marginally. The paybill is populated from the operator's own system, so there is no moment at which you could type a number that came from an untrustworthy source. If you prefer the manual route, read the number off the app's deposit screen first and then use it.

Why deposits fail to reflect

Three causes account for almost all of them. The account number field was wrong — operators disagree about what belongs there, so it is easy to carry a habit over from another book. For SportPesa our registry records: Your registered Safaricom number. The second is depositing from a phone number that is not the one registered on the betting account. The third is a genuine processing delay, which usually resolves itself within minutes.

All three are recoverable through operator support with the M-Pesa transaction code. What is generally not recoverable is money sent to an entirely different paybill — which is precisely why the safety box above exists and why we repeat it rather than tucking it away at the bottom.

The scam this page is really about

A message circulates with a paybill and a reason to use it: a promotion, an “agent”, a bonus that needs activating, a jackpot entry that supposedly requires a direct transfer. The number belongs to the sender. Because mobile-money transfers are instant and final, the money is gone before you have finished reading the confirmation.

The defence costs nothing: deposit details come from the operator's own app and from nowhere else. Not from us either — which is why, even though we publish a verified paybill above, we tell you to confirm it in the app. A publisher repeating a number that has changed is doing the scammer's work by accident.

The same applies to anyone who appears after a lost deposit offering to recover it for a fee. That is the second half of the same scam. No completed M-Pesa payment can be reversed by a stranger, and no fee changes that.

Get withdrawals right before you need them

Deposits are easy; withdrawals are where friction appears, and the cause is nearly always identity verification. An account opened under one name, a mobile-money line registered to another, or documents never uploaded — each of these surfaces at the worst possible moment, which is when you try to take out a meaningful amount.

Complete verification when you open the account, and make sure the name on your SportPesa account matches the name your mobile-money line is registered under. Ten minutes then removes most withdrawal problems before they can happen. On tax: Kenya applies withholding tax on winnings, deducted by the operator, at rates set by the Finance Act that have changed repeatedly — confirm the current position with the operator or the Kenya Revenue Authority rather than with any betting blog, this one included.

If something has gone wrong

Keep the M-Pesa confirmation SMS and its transaction code — without it nothing can be traced. Check the paybill, the account number and the sending line against what the app shows. If all three are correct, contact SportPesa directly through the support channels published on their own site.
